No Fancy License Plates or Heavy Tints |
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have warned vehicle owners using tinted windows, registration plates which do not meet specifications and beacon lights to change or take them off before a major operation starts on June 16.
Bukit Aman Traffic Police chief SAC Mohd Fuad Abd Latiff said the operation was intended to reduce risks of crimes.
"This is because it is difficult for victims to identify suspects in the event of crimes due to the use of tinted windows and registration numbers which do not meet specifications," he told reporters here, today.
The use of beacon lights must be approved by the Road Transport Department director-general under Rule 138 (1) of the Road Traffic Rules and illegal users were given until June 1 to take them off off before action was taken.
"We give vehicle owners with dark tinted windows and registration plates not following specifications until May 15.
"After the date, a RM300 compound will be imposed," said Mohd Fuad. – Bernama
Tinted windows allowed for two reasons only — JPJ

KUCHING: There are only two valid reasons for drivers to have tinted windows on their vehicles, said Road Transport Department (JPJ) deputy director-general Dato Ariffin Che Mat.
“They are health and security. The department allows tint on car windows if the person who owns the vehicle has certain health conditions that rendered them sensitive to the sun or if the person needs security protection. Most VIPs have the permit to use tinted windows for the reason of security.
“This reason has to be certified by a government specialist doctor or the police respectively.
“Application for the use of tinted windows have to be sent to JPJ headquarters with the official certification letter from the doctor or the police,” he told a press conference after closing a JPJ community programme in Kampung Muara Tebas yesterday.
He was asked to brief on the upcoming ‘Ops Cermin Gelap’, which is a nationwide operation cracking down on tinted vehicle windows.
The operation will begin on June 16. It will target vehicles with heavily-tinted windows. Permissible tint levels states a minimum of 70 per cent visible light transmission levels for the front windscreen and 50 per cent for the other windows.
Ariffin said the reason for the operation is to reduce the risk of crime, especially when the police are in search of criminal suspects.
“We are afraid of misuse by criminals, which is why we are limiting the use of tinted windows. Tinted windows make it hard for the authorities to identify criminal suspects,” he pointed out.
He reminded that all vehicles that come directly from manufacturers do not come with tinted windows, despite popular belief.
“Cars direct from the factory must have clear glass, that is an industry requirement. Any form of tint is most likely value-added by the dealers,” he said, adding that JPJ has no plans to change the current tint levels.
